    1. Nice! Haha, oh girl, no worries—the real photoshop experts have been quick to point out some faster tools like refine edge and channel-selection, so I'm going to try that for next time. See I'm still learning too :) YouTube and Phlearn have fantastic tutorials!

  11. Nice work Tanya! Saw this on facebook and followed links to here. :-)

The one thing that always seems to take the most time for me is finding all the images I'm going to use to composite into my work. Did you know ahead of time some of the images you wanted to use?

I ask this because you have the lighting in the photo just right for several of the *parts* you put into the final PS shot like the walkers and others.

It was great to see the process come to life. Do you have a longer version where we can see the process in a bit more detail. :-)

    Again, awesome job!

    1. Hi Robert! I actually didn't know—searching for images was most definitely the most time-consuming for sure. But mostly I just had the concept in my head that the sun was harsh on them, and faded to an overcast light-quality as it went into the distance, so then I shopped for specific things. For instance, it was easy to scroll through thumbnails and know certain mountains wouldn't work purely because the light was coming from the front, or that the walkers had to have some semblance of side light.

Haha unfortunately I don't have a longer version—I figured most people these days would be bored if it were any longer.

Thanks again for stopping by :) I appreciate it!

amazing photoshop skills. What sort of background/training/experience has it taken to get you to this point?

    1. Haha, it's not out of range for you, I promise! I took an intro to raster graphics class in college and that helped me understand the basics, however I really started moving forward when I was stuck at a particular cubicle job—they didn't need me for the first 3 weeks or so and I was in the basement of the office building with nothing to do. So I just started out with some Photoshop tutorials on YouTube; ones that walked me through a process to make the same scene the instructor was making. I've since found some fantastic tutorials for more advanced techniques where I can create my own scenes. That was a couple years ago, but I only really pushed forward in a personal project that I did last year (ELEMENTS Photo Manipulation series; you'll find it here on the blog under Foto Manips).

Haha, I'll be transparent and tell you that the "real" photoshop artists have not hesitated to tell me about those more advanced techniques. But in the end I'm appreciative; I know what I can work on perfecting. So you can totally have the skills! I'd start searching with YouTube for "Photoshop surreal tutorial photo manipulation" anything along those lines. :) Cheers! You should show me what you come up with!

    2. Oh, and the more advanced tutorials, plus really well taught beginner tutorials—those can be found on Phlearn :)

    1. I'm glad to hear that :) Yeah my skills are pretty basic and I'm learning more as I go to cut down on the amount of time I spend on it, but I'm loving it so far. Just did a recent one and though the selection got quicker, the idea morphed so it took about the same time, haha. But it was still cool. 1. Hi! I took an intro to Raster Graphics class in college and didn't really do much with it until I landed in a corporate job...was stuck in a boring cubicle and they had no work for me, so I did photoshop tutorials on YouTube, lol. It was super interesting, so I'd do random stuff a couple times a year. Lol, you happened to catch the one for this year :-P

You'd get it, no problem—just takes practice. Heck, I'm still learning a ton. I'll be offering online workshops in the future from my new site (TANYAMUSGRAVE.COM) One-on-one or small groups via skype or hangout. Still working on getting it all set up, but if you'd like, chuck me your email and I'll let you know when it's up!

    1. Hey! Thanks for reaching out—as far as your question, refer to the reply above. I'd love to be able to share video tutorials, and that might happen in a bit, but as of now, I'm stretched pretty thin to produce video content. BUT, I think one-on-one workshops would benefit people more anyway, so they could ask their questions directly :)

  29. Great job with the Star Wars wedding photo, it came out awesome. I couldn't help but notice you didn't use the Pen tool to remove your images from their background though. instead you used the brush tool to mask them out. I suggest you learn the pen tool, you will save lots of time, and you will have much cleaner edges.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks! Learned it and did it in the next one; check it out at tanyamusgrave.com and it's the latest manip on the blog.

I did like the pen, but I think I employed the quick selection and refine-edge tools more that time. As awesome as they were, there were still some times I fell back on my trusty brush :)

    1. Hey Phil! Thanks man—Haha I'm still learning a lot myself so no doubt you can learn whatever you need. Whenever I had a free moment at a boring job, I would work on Photoshop tutorials from YouTube. Phlearn is a really good one too. I'm developing small group and private workshops online—will probably be fully set up after the New Year. If you're interested, let me know your email address and I'll shoot you a heads up when it's ready.

    1. Haha sounds like a plan. I actually wasn't really into SW—I'd seen the movies eons ago, but by no means was part of the Nerdom Nation. So I asked my friends who were big time nerds...could AT-AT walkers be in the desert, can she have the wrong blaster as if she picked it up from an enemy like Padme, I know he should have a brown cloak, but it looks better black—so can this be in an alternate story where he just wants to be a good guy? Haha bunches of random questions that they all nerded out for, so it was fun diving into the rabbit hole. We kinda came up with our own story behind it to amuse ourselves and just went with it. People squawk about random stuff, like the blaster being too big (haha it was even bigger—one piece of advice I should've taken lots more seriously). Eh, for the most part though people have enjoyed it :) Thanks for stopping by!

And would love to have him in a X-wing or the Millennium Falcon. Need to know how much for the picture, and if it could be done by January 14, 2017. Thank you for sharing your gift.
